Korean street food is considered as a very important part of Korean culture. It is loved by both locals and tourists. It is cheap and delicious and can be found in busy areas like markets, near schools, subway stations, parks etc. These stalls situated on the streets are known as Pojangmacha in Korean language. As we all know how much Koreans love eating food so Korean street food describes their rich culture, heritage, flavors and love for it.
So, we’ll discuss top 5 Korean street foods that everyone must try at least once in their life. The food we are going to discuss will explain the story about Korean culture.
1. Tteokbokki – Spicy Rice Cake
Every person who loves Korea knows about this dish. It is very popular and recognizable Korean street food. It is made up of cylindrical rice cakes known as tteok in Korean. It is cooked in spicy-sweet red chilli sauce known as Gochujang. It can also be made by adding other things, many vendors in Korea add fish cakes, boiled eggs, green onions etc. to make the dish more delicious and tasty.
This dish has a history too. It was eaten by the royal people during Joseon Dynasty. Now this dish is mostly eaten by adults and students. It can be found in every street of Korea like Myeongdong, Gwangjang Market etc.
2. Hotteok – Sweet Korean Pancakes
It is a sweet snack that the Korean people like to eat during winter season. It is warm, soft and sweet in taste. It is kind of a pancake filled with a sweet syrup made up of brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped nuts and seasame seeds. It is a perfect snack to eat during cold weather. It’s dough is made up of yeast, flour and milk. It is fried, crispy from the outside and sweet and sugary from the inside.
It originally came from China and became the part of Korean food durin19th century. This dish further has various forms according to the region such as many regions of Korea have green tea Hotteok, savory Hotteok and many more.
3. Gimbap – Korean Rice Rolls
This dish looks similar to Japanese cuisine named Sushi but it has it’s own Korean flavors. It is made up of rice which is rolled with various other ingredients such as spinach, pickled radish, carrots, eggs, meat, fish cakes etc. Gimbap is cut into small pieces and served with some Kimchi or sauce.
It can easily found in Korean convenience stores, markets or street stalls.
4. Eomuk – Korean Fish Cake Skewers
Eomuk is also known as Odeng, it is type of a fish cake made by grinding fish meat and mixing with flour and vegetables. It looks like sticks or sheet that is boiled and eaten by the Korean. This dish is savory and comforting snack of Korea. It is very affordable and cheap and mostly eaten by the children. Eomuk is especially famous in Busan.
5. Korean Corn Dogs
It is a very popular Korean dish among Foreigners. It is a corn dog but tates nothing like western country’s corn dogs. These are deep fried sticks. It not only considers sausage but also mozzarella cheese, potatoes, ramen noodles etc. After frying, mostly it is rolled in sugar which gives a sweet-salty taste to the dish. Various types of Corn Dogs are found in Korea such as potato covered corn dog known as Gamja-Hotdog, half sausage-half cheese Hotdog, Rice cake Corndog and many more.
Corndogs became more popular after appearing in K-dramas. These can be found in many places of Korea like Hongdae in Seoul, Seomyeon in Busan etc.
