환대 Culture: The Heart of Tourism and Hospitality in South Korea

South Korea’s 환대 (hospitality) culture is the cornerstone of its tourism and hospitality industry. 환대 reflects the warm welcome, kindness, and goodwill that Koreans show to visitors. Many travelers say this loving spirit makes them want to return—or even settle in Korea. Because of this unique experience, South Korea has become one of the most popular travel destinations in 2025.

Tourism refers to travel outside one’s usual environment for leisure, business, or personal reasons. South Korea, with its rich culture, natural beauty, and history, attracts millions of tourists each year. Below are six must-visit tourist attractions to guide you in planning your next trip to Korea.

1. Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung, meaning “the palace greatly blessed by Heaven,” was built in 1395 by Yi Seong-gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. It is the largest among the Five Grand Palaces and served as the royal residence for many kings. Although destroyed during the Imjin War (1592–1598), it was restored during King Gojong’s reign under Heungseon Daewongun.

2. N Seoul Tower (Namsan Tower)

The N Seoul Tower stands 236.7 meters high on Mount Namsan. Built in 1969, it became Seoul’s first general radio wave tower, transmitting TV and radio signals across the city.

Tourists can hike for about 30 minutes or take the Namsan Cable Car. For over 40 years, the tower has remained one of Korea’s most visited landmarks, offering breathtaking views of the city. At night, the tower glows with vibrant lights. The famous Love Locks area attracts couples who wish to symbolize eternal love.

3. Gamcheon Culture Village (Busan)

Gamcheon Culture Village is one of Busan’s most visited attractions. What makes it special is that it is a living neighborhood with real residents. Many tourists describe the village as “a warm hug” because of its friendly atmosphere.

The transformation began in 2009, when students and locals created art installations throughout the village. It soon became a cultural hotspot.
Visitors can buy a stamp map, complete the alley tour, enjoy murals, and listen to residents share stories about the village. Some tourists wear Hanbok to make the experience even more memorable.

4. Jeju-do

Jeju Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its volcanic landscapes, lava tubes, and the majestic Hallasan Mountain. The island is a favorite holiday destination for its beaches, forests, and unique culture.

Jeju is home to the iconic Haenyeo (women divers) and is a popular filming location for many K-dramas. It is also famous for its Jeju Black Pork, a local delicacy.

Fun fact: Jeju Island formed two million years ago due to a submarine volcanic eruption.

5. Bukchon Hanok Village

Bukchon Hanok Village reflects 600 years of Korean history. It is filled with beautifully preserved Hanok (traditional Korean houses) from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Despite Seoul’s rapid development, Korean citizens worked hard to protect these historic homes, allowing visitors to feel like they have stepped into the past. The village is still a residential area, giving tourists a glimpse of traditional Korean living.

6. Incheon Fairy Tale Village

Located next to Chinatown, Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village brings childhood stories to life. Created in 2013 through an urban regeneration project, the village was transformed without losing its historical charm.

Colorful murals and statues celebrate tales like Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, and many more. Visitors feel as if they are walking through their favorite storybook.
